Formulation Begins with Biology, Not Ingredients
One question has occupied my mind for many years.
Where should the formulation of a nutraceutical truly begin?
The obvious answer appears to be, “with ingredients.” After all, the nutraceutical industry is full of discussions about curcumin, berberine, omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10, resveratrol and countless other molecules. Whenever a new ingredient becomes popular, formulations begin to appear around it.
But should that really be our starting point?
I believe not.
Before selecting an ingredient, should we not first understand the biology that has gone awry?
The human body is an extraordinarily intelligent biological system. It functions because billions of cells communicate continuously with one another. Every moment, innumerable signals travel from one cell to another, instructing them when to produce energy, when to divide, when to repair tissue, when to mount an immune response, and equally importantly, when to stop.
Life depends upon communication.
Health is maintained when these signalling systems operate with precision.
Disease, in many instances, begins when this communication loses its harmony.
If this is true, then the formulation architect must begin, not by asking, “Which ingredient is fashionable today?” but by asking a far more fundamental question:
Which biological signalling systems have become dysregulated?
Only after this question has been answered does ingredient selection become meaningful.

We first study the biology of the condition. We seek to understand the signalling pathways that are no longer functioning as nature intended. We examine how these signalling disturbances interact with one another and how they eventually manifest as what we recognise clinically as disease.
Only then do we begin selecting ingredients.
Each ingredient is chosen because it supports a defined biological function. It is not included because it is popular, but because it contributes to restoring a specific aspect of biological integrity.
Sometimes a single ingredient may influence several signalling pathways. At other times, multiple ingredients may work together to support the same biological objective. The formulation is therefore designed as an integrated biological system rather than as a collection of unrelated ingredients.
This approach has another important advantage.
Science is never static.
Every year, our understanding of human biology becomes deeper. New signalling pathways are discovered. Better delivery systems are developed. Novel botanical extracts are identified. Existing ingredients reveal previously unknown mechanisms of action.
If our formulations were built merely around fashionable ingredients, they would soon become outdated.
However, when a formulation is built upon biology, it possesses the ability to evolve. As scientific understanding advances, the formulation can be refined without abandoning its underlying scientific foundation.
For this reason, we regard every formulation as an evolving scientific architecture rather than a finished product.

Ingredients may change.
Delivery systems may improve.
Scientific discoveries will undoubtedly continue.
But the biology of human signalling will always remain the foundation upon which every formulation should be built.
Perhaps the future of nutraceutical science does not belong to those who ask, “Which ingredient should we add next?”
Perhaps it belongs to those who first ask,
“What is the biology trying to tell us?”
